My Review of Moon In The Palace

I studied Empress Wu in college and was always interested in her story. When I read the sample pages on Amazon of Moon In The Palace before release and was instantly enamored with the story. I pre-ordered and anxiously awaited its arrival.

I wasn’t disappointed. The protagonist Mei has an endearing narrative voice– easy to read, and yet deep with insight that shows how she could (SPOILER!) eventually rule China. The setting of a backstabbing harem has been done in Asian media, and the author captures the politicking well. Mei gets swept along, yet has enough agency to ensure a soft landing after disasters that could have led to worse consequence. As such, her character grows. I look forward to seeing how she eventually takes rule in Book 2
